A smart EMS factory does not buy a cabinet. It designs a material flow that protects parts, keeps operators efficient, and makes work-in-process easy to audit. The ProSMD Storage System from Southern Machinery is a structured proposal for three needs at once: SMD reel storage, finished PCBA storage, and bare PCB storage before production. The three tracks share ESD and moisture discipline but are sized for very different components.
This article is based on the ProSMD storage proposal. Capacity targets and configuration ranges below are planning references, and final selection is confirmed against the customer's product mix, line layout, and audit requirements.
The cost you haven't named
Material storage looks like overhead until the day a reel is missing, a board is exposed to humidity past its MSD floor life, or a customer audit asks where a lot sat between stencil printing and reflow. The cost of getting storage wrong is paid in three places at once.
- Humidity exposure breaks MSD components. A reel that exceeds its MSD floor life is no longer the part the BOM asked for, even if the label still reads the same part number.
- ESD damage hides in the WIP queue. A damaged component passes AOI and reaches the field, where the failure rate is the cost the factory pays.
- Bare PCB contamination and bending. A board that is stacked without protection picks up dust, scuffs, and warp that no downstream cell can fix.
- Operator time spent hunting reels. A factory that stores by memory is paying operators to find parts instead of using them.
- Audit gaps on traceability. A customer who asks which cabinet held a lot needs an answer that is not "wherever it landed".
ProSMD is built so that those five questions have the same answer on every shift.
Four steps of a three-track storage design
1. Separate the three tracks physically and procedurally. SMD reels, finished PCBA, and bare PCBs each have their own storage line, humidity target, and ESD surface specification. Mixing them is the fastest way to lose traceability.
2. Control humidity in the reel track. SMD reels are moisture-sensitive. The reel track uses moisture-proof cabinets with desiccant or dry-cabinet nitrogen purge, matched to the most sensitive component on the BOM.
3. Control ESD on every surface that touches a board. Reel containers, PCB containers, and bare board racks all need a surface resistivity in the dissipative range, not the conductive range. The S9616 ESD trolley is the moving link between tracks and is specified to the same range.
4. Audit the storage events, not just the storage state. A cabinet at the right humidity is half the answer. The other half is the event log: which lot went in, which came out, who signed for it, and how long it sat.
The vehicle: ProSMD storage system
Southern Machinery is a Shenzhen-based SMT/THT PCB assembly automation supplier founded in 2011. The ProSMD storage system is part of the company's line-side product family, sized to the way a smart EMS factory actually moves material. The vehicle section is what an engineer should expect at quotation.
- Moisture-proof cabinet → reel track at the right humidity. SMD reels are stored in moisture-proof cabinets with a humidity setpoint matched to the most sensitive component on the BOM.
- ESD reel containers → dissipative, stackable, lot-tagged. Reel containers are specified to the dissipative range and built to hold standard 7-inch and 13-inch reels.
- ESD PCB containers → finished PCBA transport and short-term storage. Finished PCBAs move from the line to inspection, conformal coating, or packing in ESD containers that protect leads and edges.
- S9616 ESD trolley → mobile link between tracks. The trolley carries bare PCBs, in-process boards, and finished PCBAs between storage, line, and inspection, with the same ESD surface as the static cabinets.
- Bare PCB storage → vertical racks, no stacking under load. Bare PCBs are stored vertically in ESD racks sized to the largest board on the line, so weight and bending are not introduced.
- Audit-ready event log → traceability by lot. The storage event log is the record the line hands to a customer auditor when they ask where a lot sat.
Specification note: capacity targets and configuration ranges below are planning references. Final cabinet count, humidity setpoint, and container size are confirmed at quotation against the customer's BOM, line layout, and audit policy.

The loop: keep the storage track auditable
The storage loop closes when the event log, the humidity setpoint, and the ESD surface specification all line up against the customer's audit policy. Pick a known lot, walk it from the receiving dock to the reel cabinet, through the line, to the finished PCBA container, and out to packing. If the event log is complete, the humidity setpoint was respected, and the ESD surface is in the dissipative range, the loop is closed. If any step is missing, that is the gap to close before the next audit. This is the loop to run before a new product mix is released to production.
Your next step
Send the BOM's most moisture-sensitive component, the standard reel sizes, the largest bare PCB dimension, and the audit policy to jasonwu@smthelp.com. The team will size a ProSMD system against the actual material flow and return a planning reference within a few working days.
FAQ
Does ProSMD replace the SMT intelligent reel storage rack?
No. ProSMD is a three-track proposal (reel, finished PCBA, bare PCB). For a high-automation reel storage system with robotic retrieval, see the SMT intelligent reel storage rack family.
Is the 1,000-reel capacity per system or per cabinet?
Per system, planning reference. Final capacity is sized at quotation against the customer's reel count and reel sizes in use.
What humidity setpoint does the reel cabinet use?
Selected against the most moisture-sensitive component on the customer's BOM. The exact setpoint and dry-cabinet technology (desiccant or nitrogen purge) are confirmed at quotation.
Are the containers stackable?
Reel containers are stackable, sized to the standard reel format, and ESD-dissipative. PCB containers are sized to the customer's largest board and built for vertical storage to avoid stacking under load.
Does ProSMD integrate with MES or ERP?
The event log can be tied to the customer's existing MES or ERP through a defined data interface. The integration scope is confirmed at quotation against the customer's audit policy.
