One trolley, one operator less: the $2,500 answer to a wave line traffic jam
Our SAGV30C return trolley costs about two months of one operator's wage and removes the walking from wave soldering pallet transport. Here is when an AGV earns its keep — and when it does not.

Watch a manual wave soldering line for ten minutes and you will see the real cost driver: people walking. An operator carries a pallet of boards to the machine, waits, unloads, carries the empty pallet back, then walks for more boards. The furnace is never the bottleneck of a manual wave line — the feet are. Our answer has been embarrassingly simple: a wireless return trolley that does the walking.
The arithmetic I use before recommending any AGV
The SAGV30C-class cart we sell costs about US$2,500 — roughly two months of one operator's wage in most of the markets we serve. That anchor is deliberate. Before any automation conversation, I ask three questions:
- How many kilometers does that operator walk per shift? Pallet runs on a wave line routinely eat 5–8 km of walking. That is the job description nobody wrote.
- What breaks when they stop walking? On most lines: nothing. The pallets still arrive, faster and on schedule.
- What is the alternative capital? Rebuilding the line into a rotary conveyor system costs an order of magnitude more and stops production for weeks. The trolley solution is designed to retrofit a running line in a lunch break, not a shutdown.
If your answers make the cart replace one labor position — which is the design intent, one unit per one walking job — payback is measured in months, and the output effect our AGV catalog documents (we have measured runs showing 10%+ throughput on constrained wave lines) is a bonus, not the promise.
What the machine actually does
The SFY03/SAGV family runs wireless on rechargeable battery, follows a set route between the loader, furnace, and unloader positions, and returns empty pallets on its own. Route programming is a 30-minute job — you can see the origin setting procedure and an AGV moving PCB magazines between stations on the channel. For the wave zone specifically, here is an AGV transporting soldering pallets at work.
When an AGV does NOT earn its keep
I tell customers no more often than you would expect:
- One-off moves. If pallets travel twice an hour, a person is cheaper. AGVs win on rhythm.
- Mazes. The line must have a repeatable route. If your layout changes monthly, fix the layout first.
- Expecting headcount deletion on day one. The honest first win is removing the walking from the job, then reassigning the person to inspection or kitting. The wage math still works; the org chart just needs honesty.
The loop this starts
Once one trolley is accepted on the floor, the same wireless logic spreads: magazine racks to loaders, loaders to furnaces, furnaces to depaneling. That is how a manual line becomes a smart line without a demolition budget — one route at a time. The SFY03 technical handbook documents the route and safety behavior in full.
