Axial resistors, diodes and capacitors are still inserted by hand on many THT lines — and the result is predictable: high manual insertion loss, inconsistent clinch quality, and a THT stage that throttles the whole PCB assembly line.

Why axial feeding fails
Most axial feeding problems are not component problems; they are feeding-mechanics problems. Before you qualify any axial tape feeder, verify how the unit handles four failure modes:
- Miss-feeds and skipped pitches. If the sprocket and indexing mechanism do not match the tape's pitch and sprocket-hole geometry, components skip or double-advance. Confirm the feeder is set for the tape pitch you actually buy.
- Bent or lifted leads. Axial tape holds components by their leads. A feeder that drags or twists the tape during indexing can bend leads before the inserter ever picks the part — and bent leads are a leading cause of insertion rework.
- Splice handling. Real production uses spliced reels to avoid stopping the line. A feeder that jams at splices costs more downtime than the manual loading it replaced. Confirm how it handles splice joints and leaders.
- Component envelope. Axial parts range from tiny 1/8 W resistors to larger film capacitors. Confirm the feeder's working range for body diameter, body length and lead spacing against your portfolio.
A reliable axial feeder holds a consistent pick position across the whole reel, so the insertion head does not re-search for every component. That consistency is what stabilizes repeatability.
The Four-Failure-Mode Feed Check
Run this before you order — it works with your existing line and tape:
- Match the pitch. Does the feeder's sprocket geometry match the tape pitch you purchase? Mismatch = skipped or double-advanced parts.
- Inspect the leads. After a test run, are leads straight and undamaged, or are they dragged and twisted?
- Run a splice. Feed a spliced reel end-to-end. Does it pass without jamming?
- Span the envelope. Feed your smallest and largest axial parts. Does pick position stay consistent at both ends?
The check tells you whether a feeder is a real upgrade or a new source of downtime — before you commit.
