Every hand-soldered joint is a quality lottery: the same solder, the same iron, different hands. Tip angle, dwell time, and feed rate drift with every operator and every hour — and cold joints or bridges only show up at electrical test.

Why the hand-solder bench leaks
Manual soldering benches bleed quality, labor, and material all at once:
- Cold joints and bridges. Too little heat makes dull, grainy joints; too much bridges adjacent pads. Both stay invisible until electrical test.
- Tip-temperature guesswork. Irons cool under load, and operators compensate by pressing harder or waiting — which degrades the joint.
- Training and turnover. A good solderer takes months to train, and the skill walks out the door.
- Wire and tip waste. Solder wire is overfed by hand; tips are burned by over-temperature.
- Throughput capped by headcount. Output scales with people, and skilled soldering labor is getting harder to find.
The Solder-Cell Fit Test
Run this before choosing a model — it works without buying anything:
- Board stability. Is it the same board type run in volume (favors dual-table), or many board types changing daily (favors fast program change)?
- Joint geometry. Do joints need angled or rotary access, or are they flat spot/drag joints?
- Speed need. 0–400 mm/s (S-C5331R) versus 0–800 mm/s (S-HX331R).
- External control. Do you need RS232 integration into an automated cell?
- Footprint and power. Bench-scale, 220 V mains, no compressed air for standard operation.

The Vehicles: two robots, two ways to scale
S-C5331R dual-table desktop solder robot. Two work tables run in one cycle, so the operator loads one while the robot solders the other. It covers spot and drag soldering on X/Y1/Y2/Z axes at 0–400 mm/s, with a rotatable option for angled joints — a productivity choice for steady volume on the same board.
S-HX331R four-axis rotary robot. It adds a Z + R rotary axis with 360° rotation, 0–800 mm/s movement, and ±0.02 mm repeat accuracy, with 3-axis interpolation and program capacity over 100 sets. It feeds tin and breaks oxidized wire (solder-breaker option), and supports RS232 external control with DVR recording and HDMI output.
Both hold 0–500 °C temperature control with ±2 °C recovery on the S-HX331R, removing the two most common hand-soldering defects — cold joints and over-burn — at the source. Specification values come from the official Southern Machinery datasheets; final configuration is confirmed after technical review of your boards, joint types, and volume.
Where each earns its place
- S-C5331R fits EMS high-mix lines and bench-to-line migration — steady same-board volume where two tables maximize output per station.
- S-HX331R fits automotive, medical, and industrial-control boards with dense, fine-pitch joints needing angled access, higher speed, or RS232 cell integration.
Both slot between THT insertion and test as flexible soldering cells, and pair with Southern Machinery's selective and dip soldering for higher volumes.
