FASTON Terminal Reel Feeding: Fix the Hidden Bottleneck on THT Odd-Form Lines

Take a power supply board with six FASTON tabs. At 4,000 boards a shift, one operator picks a metal terminal out of a bag, turns it the right way round, and presents it to the insertion head 24,000 times a day. None of that motion is skilled, and none of it repeats the same way twice. Output rises and falls with whoever is standing at the station, and the odd-form insertion step quietly becomes the slowest link in an otherwise capable SMT + THT line.

The cost you haven't named

Most factories track placement accuracy and reflow yield to two decimal places, then let terminal insertion run on operator rhythm alone.

• Sorting before inserting. FASTON and tab terminals arrive in bags or loose trays. Before any part reaches a board, someone separates pieces, judges which way the tab faces, and stages them.
• Speed that varies by operator. Feeding rate depends on who is on the station and how long they have been there. Two shifts on one product post different daily output.
• Geometry that defeats standard tape feeders. A FASTON tab is a formed metal part with a crimp barrel and a mating blade, so it does not sit in component tape like a chip resistor.
• Mis-picks and wrong orientation. Manual handling invites terminals presented backwards, tabs bent in transit, or positions skipped. Those defects survive until wave soldering, where they cost most.
• A station that cannot hold takt. Placement and reflow may have spare capacity while the soldering machine waits. If terminals are the slowest step, the line runs at the pace of one person's hands.

The Terminal Feed Readiness Check

Before you compare feeder models, put the terminal itself under review. Four checks tell you whether a reel-fed process is realistic and what it has to achieve.

1. Count the touches. For one board, tally every time a hand touches a terminal between the bag and the PCB, then multiply by boards per shift. That figure tells you whether you have an insertion process or a handling process.

2. Read the reel, not the bag. Record the terminal family, tape pitch, reel size and orientation on the reel. Reel packaging is what makes automation possible; bags and loose trays are what force a person into every cycle.

3. Fix the pick-up point. Define where the terminal waits, in what orientation, at what Z-height, and with how much clearance the insertion head has. Feeding only becomes repeatable when the part sits in the same place.

4. Set the takt and the alarm. Decide the target cycle, then decide what happens when a reel runs low, a terminal is missing, or a pick fails. Feeding without detection just moves the bottleneck into the scrap bin.

The vehicle: SRT7001 Reel Terminal Feeder

The SRT7001 Reel Terminal Feeder answers those four checks: it turns FASTON and tab terminals delivered on tape-and-reel into a part that arrives at a known point, in a known orientation, every cycle.

• Count the touches → indexed tape advance. The feeder indexes the terminal tape and presents each FASTON or tab terminal at a controlled pick-up point, so the insertion head finds the same part in the same place every cycle.
• Read the reel → packaging matched to the part. Tape pitch, reel size and orientation are reviewed from terminal samples or drawings before the feeder is built, which is what lets a formed metal terminal behave like a fed component.
• Fix the pick-up point → custom tooling and bracket. Southern Machinery designs the nozzle or gripper around the terminal geometry and sets the bracket, feeder angle, Z-height and pick-up clearance to suit the host machine, without bending the tab or crushing the crimp.
• Set the takt and the alarm → monitored feed states. Start, ready, error and sensor states let the station flag a missed feed or an empty reel rather than running short in silence. Once terminals sit on a reel in a fixed orientation, that is what lets the part move on into automated insertion.

Specification note: cycle time, reel capacity, terminal size range, and air and power requirements are confirmed at quotation, because they depend on your terminal drawings, tape pitch, boards per shift and host machine interface rather than a single default configuration.

The loop: re-check the terminal station every quarter

Feeding does not stay fixed once the feeder is installed. Product mix changes, terminal suppliers change, and a reel from a new lot can behave differently from the one you qualified. Close the loop every quarter: recount the touches on your highest-volume board, re-verify tape pitch and orientation against the drawings on file, and pull the alarm log for missed-feed stops. If a new terminal family enters production, run the Terminal Feed Readiness Check again before ramping it. That loop is what stops the station drifting back into manual work.

Your next step

Send us the terminal: photos or drawings, reel packaging details and tape pitch, the PCB hole layout, your current insertion method and target output per shift. We will return a feeding review covering whether an SRT7001 Reel Terminal Feeder suits the part, what tooling to specify, and what still needs confirming at quotation. FAQ

Can the SRT7001 feed every FASTON terminal?

No feeder should be qualified on the terminal family name alone. Geometry, tape pitch, reel format and the surface the tooling grips must be reviewed from samples or drawings before the feeder is built.

How is this different from a standard SMT tape feeder?

A FASTON tab is a formed metal part with a crimp barrel and a mating blade, not a rectangular chip. The feeder indexes purpose-built terminal tape and uses a gripper shaped around the part.

Does reel feeding replace wave soldering?

No. Reel feeding stabilises the insertion step only. Boards still continue to wave soldering or selective soldering afterwards, depending on the PCB design and the rest of the THT population.

Is this only worth it for high-volume lines?

The case is strongest where manual terminal feeding already limits output, consistency or labour. For low-volume, high-mix work a semi-automatic setup can remain reasonable.

What do you need to quote a feeder?

Terminal samples or drawings, reel packaging and pitch, PCB size, target output per shift, and host machine details.
