FUJI NXT Feeder Calibration Jig S-FFCJ10: Verify Pick Position Before the Feeder Goes On

A FUJI NXT feeder starts throwing intermittent mispicks on the afternoon shift. An operator swaps it out, the machine restarts, and the suspect feeder goes onto a shelf with a sticky note reading "bad pick". Nobody measures how far the pick point has moved. Three weeks later it is back on the machine for a different build, the vision system spends extra cycles compensating for the same drift, and the loss is booked against placement rather than against a feeder that was never checked.

The cost you haven't named

Drift is discovered on the mounter, where it is most expensive. A misaligned feeder found mid-run costs a line stop and the boards in progress — far more than an offline check.
"Bad pick" is a description, not a measurement. Without a number, feeders are scrapped, shelved indefinitely, or returned to the fleet unchanged, and none of those is a decision.
Vision compensation hides the fault and spends your CPH. The mounter can often compensate for a shifted pick point, but each compensation cycle is throughput you paid for and did not get.
Worn carriers and bent feeder bodies go unnoticed. Feeders are mechanical devices run for thousands of cycles; deformation builds gradually and stays invisible until it causes a fault.
Setup becomes the debugging step. When feeders of unknown condition go into a changeover, the first boards are used to find out which ones are wrong — setup scrap charged to the build.

The Four-Point Feeder Pick-Position Audit

Feeder health is a maintenance programme, not a spare-part purchase. Set these four points and the jig becomes a control instead of a bench ornament.

1. Sample the fleet, not just the failures. Pull a fixed number of feeders per week across the widths you run and check them whether or not they have alarmed. The value is in feeders that have drifted but not yet caused a stop.

2. Measure the deviation rather than describe it. Record the X and Y offset from the master reference as numbers. A measured offset tells you whether a feeder needs adjustment, repair or retirement; a description tells you nothing.

3. Verify tape advance and pitch as well as pick point. A feeder can present the part in the right place and still index inconsistently. Check feeding across the zones you run — 8 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm and 24 mm — under the same observation.

4. Write the pass/fail rule and the interval. Set the tolerance, decide who may adjust, and fix the re-check interval by feeder age or cycle count. A programme without an interval is a one-off exercise.

The S-FFCJ10 is a bench-mounted calibration station, not a consumable. Write the pass/fail rule → master gauge with a ±0.25 mm X-axis specification. A stated tolerance gives maintenance a pass/fail line and incoming inspection an acceptance standard for new and repaired feeders.

The loop: re-qualify the feeder fleet every week

A jig used only on failures is a repair tool; on a cadence it is a preventive control. Build the loop: each week, sample a fixed set of feeders across your widths and log the measured offset against feeder ID and cycle count. Feeders whose offset moves consistently between checks have worn carriers — pull them for service before they cause a mispick. Review the tolerance monthly against your pickup yield data; if pickup rate still slips, the problem has moved to the nozzles or the tape.
