Count How Far Your Pallets Walk Before You Buy Another Machine
Your wave solder pallets travel further on foot than any board travels on a conveyor. That distance is a headcount line item nobody has ever measured.

Put a pedometer on the person who moves wave solder pallets. Then look at the number.
Loaded pallets go to the wave soldering machine, cycle through, and come back for the next batch — carried, pushed or trolleyed by someone whose actual job title is probably not "pallet logistics." Meanwhile your newest machine waits for them.
You did not buy that machine to wait. You bought it to run.
The three loops nobody put on the layout drawing
The pallet loop. In THT lines using palletised boards, carriers move continuously: out to the wave solder, through it, back to loading. It is a closed circuit with a person in the middle of it.
The line-side supply loop. Feeders, reels, magazines and kits have to arrive at the placement and insertion stations exactly when a changeover happens. When they do not, the changeover stretches while someone walks to a store.
The crossing loop. Every one of those trips happens in aisles shared with operators, forklifts and machine loaders. The transport method has to be safe in a live factory, not just fast in a demo video.
None of these three appear on a machine layout drawing, because they are not machines. They are the reason the machines stop.
The Three-Question AGV Test
Run this before you talk to any vendor, including us. If you cannot answer all three, an AGV is the wrong next purchase.
Question 1 — What moves, and how often? Pick one loop and instrument it for a week: trips per shift, distance per trip, payload, and time spent. One number matters most — trips per shift. Low-frequency loops rarely justify automation; high-frequency, short, predictable loops almost always do.
Question 2 — Who moves it now, and what does that actually cost? Not the wage — the whole cost. The operator who leaves a station to fetch reels is not just walking; the station is idle, and the changeover clock is running.
Question 3 — What does the route share the floor with? This is where the "Safety Guardian" framing earns its keep. An AGV moving through aisles with people and forklifts needs obstacle handling, controlled docking and predictable behaviour — because an unattended vehicle in a shared aisle is a safety decision, not a productivity one.

- Question 3 spaces — safety-focused navigation and controlled docking are what make unattended transport acceptable on a live floor.
One thing we will be straight about: Southern Machinery does not publish a full public specification sheet for the SFY03. Payload, navigation method, fleet size, charging strategy and docking accuracy are confirmed against your layout and route during technical review — not pulled from a catalogue. If a vendor quotes you firm numbers for an AGV before seeing your floor plan, treat that as a warning.
How it sits in the wider line
An AGV does not replace a process machine; it removes the gap between them. In a full flow: SMT section (printing → placement → reflow → AOI) → THT section (insertion → wave or selective soldering) → board handling → inspection and traceability. The AGV is the layer that keeps material and carriers moving across those sections without a person carrying them.
That is why we treat it as integration work, not equipment sales. Route survey, docking points, traffic rules, charge positions and the trigger logic that tells the AGV a line needs material — all of it has to be designed against your actual floor.
Close the loop: keep measuring
The test is not a one-time gate. Re-instrument the loop ninety days after go-live. Trips per shift changes as your mix changes, and the loop that justified the AGV two years ago may no longer be your highest-value one — while a different loop has quietly become the new bottleneck.
