An overhead / air rail system is a board-handling layer that carries PCB pallets, solder pallets, and assembled boards above the line:
- Transfers boards from an SMT placement line to a THT insertion or wave-soldering section.
- Returns empty wave-solder pallets from the outfeed back to the line start.
- Moves magazines or carriers between parallel lines in a multi-line plant.
- Routes WIP between inspection, rework, and cleaning stations without floor-level congestion.
- Connects sections where a straight in-line conveyor cannot fit the layout.
It typically integrates through standard SMEMA-style signaling to loaders, unloaders, conveyors, and machines — so it can be added to an existing line or specified as part of a new turnkey installation.
