The Most Expensive Square Metre On Your Floor Is The Empty One
Buyers compare printers, mounters and reflow ovens. The losses hide in the one metre of air between them — where an operator picks up a board and becomes the conveyor.

Your printer is fine. Your mounter is fine. Your reflow profile is fine. And your line still misses the plan by 12%.
Walk the floor and watch what happens in the metre of air between two machines. An operator turns, picks up a stack of boards, carries it four steps, and loads it by hand. Nobody is doing anything wrong. That is the problem: the loss is invisible because it looks like normal work.
The four bills manual board transfer sends you
The touch bill. Every time a person handles a bare board, you pay for a second of labour and buy a small chance of a fingerprint, a bent edge or a board loaded backwards. None of that shows up in your machine OEE.
The mix-up bill. After AOI, NG and OK boards land in the same stack. One distracted moment at end of shift and a reject board continues downstream — and you find it at ICT, or your customer does.
The speed-mismatch bill. Your mounter runs at a different rhythm than your reflow oven or wave solder. Without buffering, the faster machine waits for a human to notice.
The layout bill. An L-shaped floor plan means boards have to change direction. If the only way to turn a corner is a person carrying a stack, you have built a headcount requirement into your architecture.
These are not edge cases. They show up most in EMS plants, LED long-board production, mixed SMT/THT lines, and retrofit projects where a line grew one machine at a time instead of being designed as one system.
The Handoff Map: five passes to fix it
Run this before you price a single conveyor. It costs you one afternoon.
1. Draw the handoffs, not the machines. Put every arrow on the layout — every point where a board changes custody. Most factories discover two or three arrows nobody owns.
2. Count the touches per board. Follow one board from loader to unloader and tally every human contact. Anything above zero at a steady-state station is a candidate for automation, and the count is your ROI input.
3. Separate the failure flow from the good flow. Wherever inspection makes a decision (SPI, AOI, ICT), the reject path needs its own physical destination. Sorting by memory is not a process.
4. Put a buffer wherever two speeds meet. Any junction between machines with different cycle times gets a buffer. The buffer converts a speed mismatch from downtime into inventory.
5. Design the crossings on purpose. Aisles, forklift routes and AGV paths all cut across lines. Decide where people and vehicles cross, then build a gate there — do not let the crossing become an unofficial manual transfer point.
Where the hardware lands on that map
Southern Machinery has supplied board handling modules from Shenzhen since 2011; the BHS product page cites 237+ global EMS customers. Map the modules to the five passes above:
Steps 1–2, killing the touches. Magazine loaders SLD250, SLD330, SLD390, SLD460A, SLD460B feed boards from racks at a documented 6-second load cycle and 30-second magazine exchange, with a servo-driven elevator, 9-inch HMI and automatic width adjustment from 50 to 460 mm at 920 ± 20 mm transmission height. Unloaders SUL330, SULD250/330/390, SULD460A/B close the loop at the end of the line. For thin or long boards, vacuum and bare-board loaders SVL250, SVL330, SLC0W-B, SLC330W-B, SLC460W-B are documented down to 0.4 mm thickness and up to 1.5 m length — the LED long-board case.
Step 3, separating the flows. NG/OK dual unloaders SBH250, SBH330, SBH390, SBH460 and SNL390 route rejects to a dedicated area; the product page specifies 50 OK slots plus 10 NG slots. Buffer stockers SBM390, S-460 Buffer and S-390KGBF add 20 slots at 25 mm clearance with FIFO, LIFO, NG/OK and go-thru modes.
Step 4, absorbing the mismatch. Inline conveyors S-350C/D, S-460C/D, S-350E/460E, SH-407D, S-460CV come in 0.5 m, 1 m and 1.5 m lengths at 350 mm or 460 mm width classes. Shuttle conveyors SPD330, SPD460, S-SC460 cover distance between machines at a documented 10-second cycle.
Step 5, the corners and crossings. Turn conveyors SCN330 (about 12 s turn, 8 s go-thru) handle direction changes; telescopic gate conveyor SAC460 (about 20 s) creates a safe walking or AGV crossing; flippers SBI460, S-K390, S-460FLP (about 20 s) handle second-side processing. SBF460 and Sub460 cover dedicated wave-solder input and output handling.
Standard SMEMA handshaking is built in, and the page names retrofit use alongside Yamaha, FUJI, JUKI, Panasonic, ASM-Siemens and legacy UIC or JUKI lines. CE and RoHS are the certifications cited. Per-model dimensions, weights and accessory lists are available on request — do not assume a catalogue value covers your configuration.
Make it a loop, not a one-off purchase
Re-run the Handoff Map every time you add or move a machine, and once a quarter regardless. Track touches-per-board as a standing number. It is the earliest warning you have that the line is drifting back toward manual work — long before it shows up in output.
If we are being straight about ROI: the BHS page cites a typical labour-saving payback of around six months for a fully linked SMT/THT handling line. Treat that as a planning benchmark, not a promise. Validate it against your headcount, shift pattern and board mix before you sign anything.
